What do I look for?

PVC-Free:
PVC is one of the most toxic substances for our planet and its inhabitants. Since safer alternatives are available for virtually all uses of PVC, it is possible to protect human health and the environment by replacing and eventually phasing out this poisonous plastic.

Post-Consumer Content:
Re-purposed material from products that have completed their life cycle.

Pre-Consumer Content:
Reconstituted by-products from the manufacturing process.

But what can I do as a consumer? 

For many, it's not always easy to be green. Luckily, there are many Eco-friendly choices readily available to eco-smart, Eco-friendlyyou from Office Plus!

Eco-Products:
Look for the logos and icons at the bottom of this page. They are used throughout the Office Productivity Guide to highlight the most Eco-smart choices. The organizations behind these certifications are internationally-respected for their contributions to the environment.

Stock up on what you always need:
We’ve made it easy to buy your Office Essentials in quantity. Fewer deliveries = less harm to the environment. The Buy More and Save deals make it simple to stock up on your most used supplies. Also consider buying high yield printer toner or twin-pack cartridges. The cartridge casings can be recycled. Call and ask about our recycling policy.

Eco-Smart Purchasing:
Buy paper that originates in managed and sustainable forests, pens that can be refilled (even ones that will
compost), rechargeable batteries and memory sticks or rewriteable CDs. There are many ways to be Green, consult the Office Productivity Guide for more ideas.

FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)
All products bearing this mark have come from holistically managed forests in which waterways, wildlife habitats and species are protected and the rights of local and native communities are respected. FSC-certified products are monitored from forest to store shelf to ensure that its components come from healthy, sustained forests. Only FSC-certified companies are able to make and sell FSC-certified products.

GREENGUARD
A certification that covers products and materials which have been stringently tested for chemical and pollutant emissions. All GREENGUARD certified products must meet tough standards based on established criteria from key public health agencies.

EcoLogo Environmental Choice
This program compares products/services with others in the same category, develops rigorous and scientifically relevant criteria that reflect the entire lifecycle of the product, and awards the EcoLogo to those that are verified by an independent third party as complying with the criteria. Only the top 20% of products available on the market can achieve certification.

SFI (Sustainable Forestry Initiative) Chain of Custody
Promotes sustainable forest management and considers all forest values. It includes unique fibre sourcing requirements to promote responsible forest management on all forest lands in North America.  When you see the SFI label on a product, you can be confident you are buying wood or paper from certified forests or certified sourcing.
